McKim Mansion's Hook & Hastings being moved!!
Here is a photojournal of the McKim Hook & Hastings as it is being dismantled
by organ builder David Story for restoration
Here is a report from David Storey, dated Feb 8, 2004:
"With the help of the Organ Clearinghouse crew, the massive swell slider chest
was removed fom its perch about 25' in the air. Next came down the 16' Open wood
and the even larger scale 32' bourdon. The amount of lumber in an organ like this
is staggering. If you can imagine pipes that are 24"square on the outside, made
of 4 boards that are 2" thick and 17' long, and that's just one pipe! We believe
the leather on the reservoirs to be original as we found no signs of scraping or
releathering. double re-enforced hinges, all leather inside and out is skived, even
on the giant feeders. This is such an extravagant macine!"
The final phases
Caleb tries on a 32' bourdon. Seems a little big.
Next we see the building frame. Note the iron bars tieing it into the wall.
